The Wright Brothers may have been pretty hipster, rolling around building wing-warping biplanes and beach racing, but they weren't hipster enough to build a fixie cafe racer bicycle. Maybe, at the turn of the century, it was avant garde to embrace technology instead of pay too much for "authentic vintage?"

Just Add Power: Aviation Was Born Today
December 17, 1903. With names like Wilbur and Orville, they knew they'd have to do something big to impress the ladies. Out in Kill Devil Hills, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, they waddled their powered glider into the air for that briefest of moments. With decades of glider pilots making some impressive hops … Continue reading Just Add Power: Aviation Was Born Today
Huge Shake Up At Motorcyclist Magazine
The world of print journalism is definitely changing. Much of it is in decline, but new segments are appearing because of it. Those who do want print (about motorcycling at least) seem to want an experience more than they want a cheap thrill. Flagging sales are hitting the entire industry in an increasingly online, bite-sized … Continue reading Huge Shake Up At Motorcyclist Magazine
Flat Track In Photos
The Santa Rosa Mile was impossible to forget. The high point was certainly the battle royale between Jared Mees and Bryan Smith for the champion, with Smith nearly losing it all in the final feet, but holding off Mees to secure his first GNC1 title. The low point was obviously the shocking death of both … Continue reading Flat Track In Photos
The Hundredth Percentile
We talk about pushing "one hundred percent" in racing a lot. I think it is often overlooked just how hard that is to do, and just how often we mistake ninety-nine percent for a hundred. I saw two men both give a hundred percent in detestable conditions, just a few weeks ago. It was the … Continue reading The Hundredth Percentile
Pre-Race Grid Face From Santa Rosa
If you have raced competitively at any level you know the feeling. It could have been running track in high school. It could have been mountain bikes in a local club. Here it is national level flat track. In any event you've felt the butterflies. You probably developed a pre-race ritual or routine to burn … Continue reading Pre-Race Grid Face From Santa Rosa
The Santa Rosa Mile Is Too Many Good Stories For One Weekend
Flat track racing by it's very nature is fun to watch. You don't need to know the names of the riders or their back story. There isn't even a requirement that you have an interest in motorcycles. The thing about flat track is a basic human emotion that anyone can grasp. You are watching a massive pack of talented people who all thought
Adventure Comes In Many Forms
Adventure does not have to be chasing distant horizons or cheating death. I think that is one of the biggest misconceptions and one reason so many people are unhappy with ordinary existence; they fail to see the adventure they can seize all around them. Taking up that hobby, joining that group, volunteering at that organization, … Continue reading Adventure Comes In Many Forms
Announcement: Canceling Next Event
Due to financial constraints, the final event we were scheduled to attend will have to be missed. The Bonneville Vintage GP at the Utah Motor Sports Campus is probably my favorite race of the season. It is well attended, the track is fun and challenging, the paddock is full of cool people and intriguing machines, … Continue reading Announcement: Canceling Next Event
Pikes Peak 2016: Sidecars To The Summit PART 2
[Continued From Part 1] Eventually I found an old article with the 2013 results and compared them to our time. Subculture Racing's 2013 record: 11:26.987. Team Johnny Killmore's 2016 time: 11:26.644: a difference of only 0.343 seconds. If I had missed one more upshift, if I had slacked off in one turn, or if Matt had missed one … Continue reading Pikes Peak 2016: Sidecars To The Summit PART 2
